Boiling Point club nite

Well for those who regulary visit my blog, may have noticed I haven't been posting much recently, partly my fault as I have been real busy with my day job.

Firstly I'd like to end any speculation concerning the Boiling Point club night which any of you who were regulars will know has finished for a while.

The April and May nites were poor as far as numbers. were concerned , the blame I place with myself for changing the Saturdays as I have a radio show to do the next morning, and I'm not any younger!

After the summer break we stuck a lot of time and effort into promotion to make the October nite a real cracker but alas it was'nt to be as the crowd was still thin on the ground. I spoke to Take 5 and told them that I wanted to rest for a while and if I did start it again it would probably be every 3 months. We all agreed that it was for the best and so watch out for a few odd dates there in 2009!

I love doing the radio show as it gives me far more scope and of course I still do spots for the Africa Delay boys Samy , Pedo and Mark in Frankfurt, that night for me is killer, where it 's magic turning up in Germany with just a record box and playing!!

So my first love the radio show carries on and check this blog regularly for club nites and info etc.

Summer's Over!

Well after the boiling hot summer we've had you'll all be needing some boiling hot music!
We'll be back at Take 5 on Saturday October 25th, and really looking foward to sharing some the great new tunes I've found over the last three months. Welcome to all the UEA and Art School freshers who like the tropical vibe.

Thanks to all my guest DJs for a great night last week, especially the wonderful Mr Maclean who had the floor bopping non stop. Next one will be February 23, as usual we will be packing out the cellar at Take 5, our favourite Norwich venue. Don't forget to check out our My Space site for up to date videos and photos.

I'm pleased to have Sure-D (Marvel/Def Tex) as our special guest on the 23rd bringing his brand of afro funk , looks like its gonna be another packer with regular guests Spen and Mark plus I've had some wicked tunes arrive this week . I'm sorting through them right now ,another killer from the 60s from Malian multi insrumentlist Sorry Bamba,one of the toughest 7" from the Guinian syliphone label by Balla and his Balladins and, by a real fluke, I've found a cracker Ivory Coast EP by Mamadou Doumbia plus yet another Baobab LP find along with the legendary Ebo Taylor LP....... oh and the 1st record by Kante Manfila with the Ambassadours !!!

First Gig of 2008, January 26 @ Take 5

We're back to end of the month for the first 2008 gig, with old and new guest DJs, but the same mix of sizzling sounds.

Bassekou Kouyate @ The Arts Centre Nov 22

If you're Norwich based, try and catch this gig! We saw them at Womad this year (there's a short video in our July archive) and they were awesome. Blurb from his my space site:Taj Mahal describes him as a genius, a living proof that the blues comes from the region of Segu. Bassekou Kouyate is one of Malis best-known Ngoniplayers. He has collaborated with many important traditional musicians of his country as well as international such as Carlos Santana, U2 among many many others. Most recently he is featured on Ali Farkas posthumous album 'Savane' and toured with him leaving a lasting impression on the audience as the bands solo ngoni player. Bassekou was born in a village called Garana about 60 kms from Segu, in the remote countryside on the banks of the Niger river. He was raised in a traditional musical environment, his mother a praise singer and his father and brothers exceptional ngoni players. He moved to Bamako when he was 19 years old where he met the young Toumani Diabate. By the late 1980s Bassekou was part of Toumanis trio and they recorded their first albums together, Songhai and Djelika. Bassekou married the singer Ami Sacko (so-called the Tina Turner of Mali) and they are much solicited for the traditional Sunday wedding parties that happen in the streets of Bamako. After collaborating a lot with others both nationally and internationally Bassekou now finally has put together his own band: Ngoni ba; the big ngoni: Malis first ngoni quartett. In July he recorded his debutalbum Segu Blue for the Munich based company out l here rec.

Last night

Thanks to all friends old and new for turning out on Nov 3 to Take 5 for another Boiling Point extravaganza! Who needs fireworks when you can watch the musical sparks fly and warm yourselves with spicy, red hot tropical sounds?.


Mr Maclean, Spenn and the Anthrologist did us proud as usual, and thanks to the Madhatter for his short but sweet guest spot. Also it was celebrations all round, with a happy birthday to Finn and the lovely Jules.
Next one will be Saturday December 1st, our last of 2007. This is promising to be another fantastic night in one of the few remaining Norwich venues where you can still find a great eclectic mix of music ! Worth saving yourself for this one!
